Yorkshire Dales Market Towns

richmond

Situated amid the breathtaking countryside of Swaledale in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, Richmond is a market town with a long and very rich history. There are many nearby walks to be enjoyed or visitors can take in the beautiful facades of the many Georgian buildings.

Richmond can trace its history back to the building of its Castle by the Normans in 1071, though there is evidence to suggest the settlement goes back to the Neolithic period.

The town takes its name from the Norman Riche-Mont, meaning "Strong Hill". The Castle is open to the public year round and offers fantastic views of the town.

At the heart of Richmond is its sweeping cobbled market place, thought to be one of the largest in England.

Indoor markets are held on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. A lively outdoor market is held every Saturday, and the Farmers Market comes to town on the third Saturday of every month.

After taking in the history of the town there are many independently run shops to browse, and of course you can enjoy the delights of the splendid tearooms.

Richmond offers a full calendar of events with the Richmond Meet in May, Richmond Live in August and the Walking Festival in September.

If that all sounds just a little too hectic you can take in a production at the towns historic Georgian Theatre Royal, visit the Green Howards Regimental Museum or simply enjoy the spectacular scenery as you stroll along the banks of the River Swale.

Market days:

Outdoor: Saturday

Indoor: Tuesday; Thursday; Friday; Saturday

Farmers Market: Third Saturday of the month
