Peaceful Xmas for Cock Robin

[Thursday 23 December 2010]

Britain’s national bird, the robin, is about to enjoy a peaceful Christmas and New Year, thanks to the freezing weather conditions.

The robin is traditionally one of our most argumentative birds, particularly when it comes to other robins, regularly engaging in noisy territorial disputes.

But scientists say that in this appalling weather, millions of them are flocking to garden feeders and have even buried the hatchet to allow rivals to feed.

British Trust for Ornithology members are reporting that virtually every garden in the country has a robin visitor – numbers have increased by almost 60% since the harsh weather struck – but most surprisingly, many gardens have more than one.

Boundaries have broken down and “groups of robins are feeding cheek by jowl on bird tables and feeders,” report members of the trust’s GardenWatch scheme.

One garden in Cheshire had six robins feeding together, a sight which amazed even the professional ornithologists at the BTO.
