Craven District Council would like its residents to share their thoughts and ideas about how they see the future of Skipton Town Hall.
A drop-in event will be held on Thursday 21 October between 2 - 8pm in the Town Hall.
This listed building was built in 1862 and is still home to some Craven District Council services; the Craven Museum & Gallery as well as the Town Council Chamber with its famous ‘mouseman’ furniture made by Robert Thompson of Kilburn. The main hall is used for concerts and collectors fairs.
The building is a huge drain on District Council resources and needs very substantial investment to bring it up to just a reasonable standard. Given the present depressed economic climate and anticipated Government budget cuts of up to 40%, the District Council needs to examine what options there are for its future use.
The drop-in event will give residents the opportunity to share their ideas about the ownership and management of the building.
Possible options include:
- Splitting the Town Hall into two distinct buildings to be let/sold commercially and/or kept for community use
- Retaining it as one building and sold/let for commercial uses
- Placing the Town Hall in a Trust to be either sold outright or leased
Skipton Town Council is keen to play as prominent a role as possible in negotiations relating to the future use of the Skipton Town Hall building.
