Milestone for Go Dales! project

[Friday 12 November 2010]

An action-packed scheme that introduces young people to outdoor adventure in Yorkshire Dales National Park has reached a major milestone.

Go Dales!, which was launched two years ago, has just filled the 1,000th place on one of its taster sessions designed for people aged between 14 and 25.

The project aims to show groups and individuals the huge range of adventure activities they can take part in the beautiful landscape of the National Park and encourages them to care for this unique area. It also links participants with the relevant club so they can continue their chosen sport.

Go Dales! Project Officer Kath Needham said: “I’m really pleased with the success of Go Dales!

“We have managed to help a lot of young people from the Keighley, Bradford, Craven and Richmond areas to try things they have never done before.”

Activities include everything from climbing, horse riding and kayaking to caving, cycling and sailing and even the chance to work with Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority (YDNPA) Rangers.

Some participants try a taster session while they are working towards the discovery level award run by the John Muir Trust, which encourages the exploration and conservation of wild places.

“We have recently started working with a young parents group from Skipton to show what can be achieved walking both with and without the children,” Kath said.

“And this month (November) we have a group of women from Craven and Richmondshire aiming for their silver National Navigation Award after gaining their bronze in the spring.”

Go Dales! is particularly keen to hear from groups of young women aged between 18 and 25 who live in the project area and who would like to try out some of the activities on offer.
