Gardensharrogate...springing into action

[Tuesday 08 March 2011]

Harrogate in Bloom’s latest project is underway to showcase the local area’s floral excellence by holding a free gardening event at the Great Yorkshire Showground.

The inaugural gardensharrogate is being held on Sunday, 20 March 2011 in the Wharfe Room of the Pavilions of Harrogate, at the Great Yorkshire Showground, Wetherby Road.

Gardensharrogate is the tourism arm of Harrogate in Bloom and the aim is have an open event to showcase all the wonderful horticultural work that goes on in and around the town.

There are more than 30 exhibitors, some are already very well known – RHS Garden Harlow Carr and the North of England Horticultural Society which organises the spring and autumn flower shows. But this is an opportunity to recognise the excellent work done by volunteer groups and smaller venues too.

Harrogate in Bloom member Mary Bond explained: “When I was selling the Harrogate Crocus mix last year, it brought me into contact with all sorts of groups I’d never heard of. For instance, Sustrans Rangers which is a volunteer organisation that looks after the cycle paths in the area.

“The focus of In Bloom has changed in recent years and now environmental awareness and sustainability is every bit as important as neatly mown grass and weed-free flower beds. The cycle paths through the town are excellent wildlife corridors which are not over-managed and the members have been busy planting crocuses. These will not only provide nectar and pollen for bees early in the season, but also give a hint of spring colour to anyone cycling along the route.”

Another lesser-known exhibitor is Cold Cotes, a guesthouse out at Felliscliffe, which has an award-winning garden open to the public on Sundays from May – September.

“I hadn’t come across either of these in the twenty years I’ve lived in Harrogate, added Mary. “So I guessed that was probably the same for other people too. That’s when we decided to give them a shop window right in town and we’re inviting the public to come and see the wonderful, often unsung work that’s going on all around us. And if they want to get involved, so much the better; there’ll be people they can talk to directly and also ask for advice and help.”

The event will take place on Sunday 20 March in the Wharfe Room at Pavilions of Harrogate, 2.00 – 4.40pm. Entry and parking are free and light refreshments will be available.
